How to Get Your Business on Google Maps in Kenya
When a customer in Nairobi searches “salon near me” or “hardware shop Kitengela”, Google shows a map with a few businesses on it. Most customers choose from that map. They call, or they ask for directions. Many never open a website.
If your business is not on that map, the customer does not know you exist.
This guide explains how Google Business Profile works, what it takes to show up, and the mistakes that keep most Kenyan businesses invisible.
Key points:
- Google Business Profile is free. It is how your business appears on Google Search and Google Maps.
- You do not need a website to start, but you do need to be verified.
- Most businesses in Kenya are verified by a short video recorded on your phone.
- Your category, photos, reviews, and correct details decide whether customers choose you.
- Reviews must come from real customers. Paying for reviews can get your profile suspended.
What is Google Business Profile?
Google Business Profile is the free listing that shows your business on Google Search and Google Maps. It shows your name, location, phone number, opening hours, photos, and reviews. Customers can call you, get directions, or visit your website straight from it.
Think of it as your signboard on the main road. Your website is the inside of the shop. A customer has to see the signboard first.
Do I need a website to be on Google Maps?
No. You can create and verify a Google Business Profile without a website. Many customers will call you directly from the profile.
A website still helps. When your profile links to a good website, customers trust you more and Google has more information about your business. But if you do not have one yet, do not wait. Start with the profile.
How do I create a Google Business Profile?
Before you create anything, search for your business on Google Maps. Your business may already be listed. Customers and Google sometimes add businesses without the owner knowing.
You will find one of three situations:
- Your business is not listed. You create a new profile at business.google.com.
- Your business is listed but unmanaged. You claim it.
- Someone else manages it. A former employee, a web designer, or a relative. You request access.
Do not create a second profile if one already exists. Duplicate profiles confuse customers, and one of them may get suspended.
One more thing: use a Gmail account that belongs to the business, not a staff member’s personal account. Many Kenyan businesses have lost their profiles when an employee left with the login.
How does Google verify a business in Kenya?
For most businesses today, Google asks for a verification video. You record it live on your phone, through your Business Profile. You cannot record it earlier and upload it, and it must be one continuous recording with no editing.
The video has to prove three things: where your business is, that it is real, and that you are the one running it.
Google reviews the video within about five business days. If it fails, Google tells you what was missing and you can record again.
The most common reason verification fails in Kenya is a missing or unreadable signboard. If Google cannot see your business name at your location, the video will not pass.
Verification is where most business owners get stuck. The requirements sound simple, but small mistakes cost weeks: filming in the wrong order, missing proof that you run the business, or showing the wrong things for a home-based business. In my course, I give you the exact shot-by-shot plan for the video, and what to do when Google rejects it.
What makes a Google Business Profile rank higher?
Showing up on the map is one thing. Being chosen is another. These are the parts that matter most:
1. Your primary category. This tells Google what your business is. It is one of the biggest reasons you show up, or do not, for a search. Choose the one that describes your core business, not everything you do. A gym with a juice bar is a Gym, not a juice shop.
2. Correct name, address, and phone number everywhere. Your details must match on Google, your website, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp Business. Google checks other sites to confirm your details. When they do not match, Google trusts your profile less, and customers call the wrong number.
3. Real photos. Customers look at photos first. Use real photos of your business, not stock images or AI-generated pictures. When a customer visits and the place looks different, you lose their trust.
4. Reviews. Many recent, good reviews make a business look safe to choose. Few or none makes it look risky, even when the business is excellent.
5. Accurate hours. If someone drives to your business and finds it closed, they will not come back. Set holiday hours for days like Madaraka Day, Mashujaa Day, and Jamhuri Day. Google shows them to customers on that day.
6. A clear description. You have 750 characters. Say what you do, where you are, who you serve, and what makes you different. Leave out words like “best” and “number one”; customers do not believe them.
Each of these has a right way and a wrong way. For example, there is a simple method for finding which category your top competitors use, and it takes five minutes. The course walks you through it, along with a description formula and a photo list for every type of business.
How do I get more Google reviews?
The easiest way is to make leaving a review easy. Your profile gives you a review link and a QR code. Send the link on WhatsApp after every sale or job. Place the QR code at your counter.
Ask at the right moment: right after a good haircut, a finished job, or when a customer thanks you.
Google’s rules on reviews are strict:
- Do not offer discounts, gifts, or free services in exchange for reviews.
- Ask all your customers, not only the ones you know are happy.
- Do not write reviews yourself, or ask staff, family, or friends to do it.
- Do not buy reviews. Google removes them and can suspend your profile.
Knowing the rules is the easy part. Asking without feeling awkward is harder. So is replying to a bad review in a way that makes new customers trust you more. The course includes the exact words to use in person and on WhatsApp, and a five-step method for replying to bad reviews.
Can I delete a bad Google review?
No. You cannot delete reviews on your profile. If a review breaks Google’s rules (fake, offensive, spam, or from someone who was never a customer), you can report it, and Google decides whether to remove it.
Always reply calmly, even while you wait. Future customers read your replies to see how you treat people. Silence looks worse than the review.
How do I know if my Google profile is working?
Open your Business Profile and tap Performance. Google shows how many people viewed your profile, the words they searched, and how many called you, asked for directions, or visited your website.
Look at the direction over months, not daily changes. If views go up but calls stay flat, customers are finding you but something is putting them off.
If you have a website, a tracking link shows exactly how many visitors came from your profile. It takes five minutes to set up, and the course shows you how, along with a simple monthly record so you can see what’s working.
Frequently asked questions
Is Google Business Profile free in Kenya?
Yes. Creating and managing a profile costs nothing.
Can I be on Google Maps without a physical shop?
Yes. If you go to your customers, such as cleaning, plumbing, or delivery, you can hide your address and list the areas you serve instead.
How long does Google verification take?
After you submit your verification video, Google reviews it within about five business days.
Should I pay someone who offers instant verification?
No. There is no shortcut. Some of these methods break Google’s rules and lead to suspension later.
How often should I update my profile?
Check it monthly. Add new photos, update hours when they change, reply to reviews, and record your performance numbers.
Get your profile set up properly
You now know how Google Business Profile works and what decides whether customers choose you. What’s left is doing it right: the verification video plan, the category research, the review messages, the tracking setup, and the 15-minute monthly routine that keeps your profile working.
That’s what my course covers. It’s the same step-by-step process we use for clients at KaziBora Digital. It has 17 short lessons, each ending with a task on your own profile, so by the end your profile is done, not just understood.
